Reutemann Rules

Had just one or two things gone his way, Carlos Reutemann could have won the 1974 World Driving Championship and, title in hand, the rest of his career might have been a wholly different story.

That year he won three races, as many as eventual champ Emerson Fittipaldi, and more than anybody else in the chase.

But those "one or two things" were not there for him, and he finished an utterly preposterous sixth in the final standings.

In this painting Carlos is shown at the Austrian Grand Prix, an ultra-fast race where he and his Brabham were the controlling speed, winning wire to wire in spellbinding fashion.

At this stage his pursuers are Niki Lauda, Fittipaldi, Clay Regazzoni, Ronnie Peterson and team-mate Jose Carlos Pace.
