1970 Porsche 917 LH

It is in every history book that Porsche won their first 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970.

Yet, the most distracted observers tend to believe that the winner was the car that came in second.

The mistake should be attributed to the smashing looks of the long-tailed 917 driven by Gerard Larrousse and Willi Kahusen. Painted in purplish blue and apple green in a scheme dubbed at first sight as "psychedelic", the car was indeed a serious front runner, but constant rain conspired against its chances, and the shorter, "sober" 917 of Dick Atwood and Hans Herrmann prevailed.

Original painting commissioned by Mr. Patrick Kelley.
