Back in 1950, stunt and race driver Joie Chitwood, doubling for Clark
Gable in "To Please a Lady", was shown on screen as qualifying
for the Indianapolis 500 during the arrival of a violent storm.
Later on, in 1953, life imitated and surpassed art, when Bill Vukovich
actually run his four laps at the Brickyard's time trials under worsening
weather conditions, with heavy clouds crawling over from the North,
sunlit at the top, slate gray at the bottom.
The final yards of the run were covered just as the downpour began
and, as the car reached pit lane, Jim Travers, Frank Coon and Jack
Beckley joyfully jumped all over the driver and then, soaked to the
bone, pushed the Fuel Injection Special all the way to its garage
in Gasoline Alley.
Their exhilaration was justified. Vuke had the rain beaten and pole
position secured.
