The fittest survivors in a day of tragedy, A.J. Foyt and his Sheraton-Thompson Special led uncontested for the last 145 laps of the 1964 Indy 500, after 55 laps of turmoil and mayhem marked that race as the most dramatic ever held at the Speedway.
After three years of campaigning a Watson clone built by Floyd Trevis, A.J. finally drove a roadster actually built by A.J. Watson himself, and in ’64 alone the new “Old Gray Mare” earned more prize money than any other unit ever made by “The Head”, although this happened only after Eddie Kuzma modified it according to a laundry list of changes cleverly written by George Bignotti.
This sideview is another pieces shown in ROAD & TRACK’s “Mr. 500”. My original series on paper is now sold out, but I will print the image in the original’s size, on canvas, as artist’s proofs and only on request, just in case you missed the series or desire an enhanced version of this extremely popular painting.
Original in the collection of Mr. James Carroll.
